He found out that there were 14 different species of finches that occupied the islands. Each of them had a different type of beak which helped them because they all ate different types of food. (They had different niches).
Also, he saw how the fittest animals survived. So, the fastest animals will have a greater chance of living longer as opposed to slower ones.
