The miraculous image was destroyed by fire, but replaced with a new image in the 1330s by Bernardo Daddi. It was set in a sophisticated designed and lavishly wrought canopy by Orcagna. Bernardo Daddi's madonna and child, commissioned for orsanmichele, replaced an earlier madonna and child, renowned for its miraculous powers.
