fertile lands surround the nile
the nile provides irragtion for the surrounding farms
EVIDENCE
The Nile River is the only major freshwater body in North Africa.
At one time, the Nile overflowed its banks every year, flooding the surrounding areas. The floods deposited fertile soils along the Egyptian flood plain, making the region productive farmland. Centuries of floods have created an immense river delta in Cairo, Egypt's capital. The delta at 13,700 miles (22,000 sq km) is approximately the size of Massachusetts. It's the site of much of the country's farmland, providing food for the population and cash crops for export.
As you can imagine, this annual flooding caused much damage in the region. To control the flooding, the Aswan Dam was built.
This huge dam and other smaller dams along the Nile prevent flooding. Not only do these dams block the floodwaters, they also stop mineral deposits from reaching the flood plain or the delta. As a result, the fertility of these areas is decreasing. Now the Nile only provides irrigation water for surrounding farmlands.
