Hail is formed when frozen rain moves up and down within an anvil or thunderstorm cloud. In other words, for hail to be formed, droplets of water freeze together (forming ice) in the thunderstorm cloud. The pieces of ice formed during hail are called hailstones.
Hails should not be mistaken for snows. Hails are actually different from snow in that while hails are ice that are formed and fall during thunderstorms, snows are formed when water vapour freezes in the cloud which might not be during thunderstorms.
