First Person
In the poem, “In My Mind,” by Kate Engelbert,
readers are presented with a poem that is in the first person point of
view. In the future, when try to
determine what point of view is being used, be on the lookout for pronouns. Here are some of the pronouns used by the
differing points of view:
FIRST PERSON: I, me, my, myself, we, us, mine, our, ours,
ourselves
SECOND PERSON: you, yours, yourself, yourselves
THIRD PERSON: he, his, him, himself, she her, hers,
herself, they, theirs
With that in mind, let’s look at some of
the instances where pronouns are used within the poem:
“There I stand.”
“I can hear the
laughter”
“In
my hand.”
“But
the real me?”
Thus, when looking at the
pronouns used, it can be determined that first person is the point of view.
