It is to note that Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, is considered the founder of the modern Democratic Party. The newly-formed party is somewhat based on President Jackson beliefs about 'sovereignty of the people.’ Jackson and his supporters believed that the government is the enemy of individual liberty. Note that at that time, the American population has large numbers of individuals considered at the fringes of the society, the immigrants, small individual farmers, and urban laborers. Obviously, personal liberty appealed to these groups and so resulted to the dominance of the party from 1832 to the mid-1850s.
