Why european dominance of aztecs wasn't inevitable?

when Spain tried to take over their empire, the were focused on land, but mainly gold. The Spanish also had small pox but got more of a resistance to it over time but the Aztecs were effected by it. After many Aztecs died it was easier for the Spanish to take over so small pox helped them take out the aztec population.
