The purpose of both the chorus and chorus leader was to give the audience the history or background to the tragic events that occurred. In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the chorus leader explains why Antigone's brothers have died. The chorus discusses the battle in great detail while the chorus leader states the salient points of the battle.
