Salutations!

The basis of these divisions were called social class. These social class consisted of 3 estates: 1) First estates 2) Second estate 3) Third estate. The first estates consisted of clergies. Second estates consisted of nobility (people who advised the king) and the last estate were consisted of poor peasants of farmers.

Hope I helped (:

Have a great day!

In the Old Regime, there were Three Estates which were:

  • The First Estate

This was made up of the Church Clergy. They included priests and other church leaders. They were able to tax the people up to 10% of their income

  • The Second Estate

This was made up of the royals and the nobility. They represented about 2% of the population and like the first estate, did not pay taxes.

  • The Third Estate

This contained everyone who was not in the other classes. They had the common people, the middle class businesspeople, and the peasants. They paid 100% of the taxes and yet had no real authority.

In conclusion, the estate system of France was quite unfair and the ill-treatment the Third Estate felt was the reason for the French Revolution.
