What is happening to Odysseus and his crew is a test in keeping self-control and obedience. The Sirens are a symbol of temptation that keeps Odysseus and his men from continuing their journey. In order to fight the temptation, Odysseus practiced self-control, keeping himself from listening to the Siren. Meanwhile, Odysseus' men exhibit loyalty to Odysseus by doing whatever he ordered them to do no matter what.
