This is figurative language to say that mankind has certain traits of God the creator. Because the complete image and nature of God are unknown, "the likeness of God" expresses the idea that there will be types of resemblance between the creature and creator. 

A good example that conveys the idea is the resemblance between an author and his/her writings, or between an artist and his/her paintings.
