He believed it should stay the founding fathers wrote it.  “I believe that the Union can only be preserved by maintaining inviolate the Constitution of the United States as our fathers have made it.” This quote states that Douglas thought that the Constitution should be “preserved” meaning preserved or kept. He did not want the constitution to be modified. The historical event that shares Douglas’s points of view is the American Civil War. Douglass shares a point of view with the Confederates. This is represented by their liking of slavery and not wanting to add any amendments.
