An EKG is an indirect measure of heart muscle contraction because depolarization of the heart causes heart muscle contraction. Heart cells will depolarize on their own without an external stimuli. This characteristic of the heart muscle is known as automaticity or autorhythmicity.

What do you mean by Depolarization ?

In biology, depolarization or hypopolarization refers to a change in a cell's electric charge distribution that causes the cell to have less negative charge inside it than outside . Numerous cell functions, cell-cell communication, and the general physiology of an organism all depend on depolarization.Action potential of a neuron demonstrating repolarization, in which the internal charge of the cell returns to a more negative value, and depolarization, in which the internal charge of the cell becomes less negative (more positive).

In higher organisms, the majority of cells maintain a negatively charged internal environment in relation to their external environment. The cell's membrane potential is referred to as this differential in charge. Depolarization briefly increases the cell's negative internal charge.
