Disinhibition effect describes the tendency to say or do things in one environment (such as online) that one would not say or do in most other environments.

John Suler, a psychologist, originally used the phrase "disinhibition effect" in his 2004 work, "The Online Disinhibition Effect."

Suler investigated six forms of online reticence:

  1. anonymity through dissociation ("You don't know me")
  2. being invisible (you can't see me)
  3. Inconsistency ("See you later")
  4. introjection from a solipsist ("It's all in my head").
  5. Imagination based on dissociation ("It's just a game")
  6. status and power are minimised ('Your rules don't apply here').

Disinhibition is the term used to describe a lack of restraint or a disrespect for social norms.

When someone is uninhibited, they may act recklessly and without thinking about the consequences of their environment.
