"The number of children living with a single father is on the rise. Research on single fatherhood is scarce. Oftentimes the research on the effect of fathers does not even distinguish between single father households and married or cohabitating fathers. Single fathers receive less social support than single mothers. They are also more likely to be single fathers due to stressful circumstances like divorce and the mother is unfit to care for the children or to be widowed. Even so, “with a few possible exceptions, the children of single fathers do about as well in terms of internalizing behavior and 9 academic performance .... do not seem to indicate significant long-term differences, as related to marriage, teen birth, and divorce, between those reared in single-father versus single-mother homes” (Coles, 2015). Single father households tend to be more stable when compared to single-mother households. Typically there are fewer non-biologically related adults that end up living with single fathers throughout the life of their child, while stable single-mother households are rare."
