Let us take a price of 100.

So, let us now consider the order availing 40% off first then 10 %,

$\begin{gathered} 100\times\frac{40}{100}=40\text{ off} \\ \text{Amount =100-40=60} \\ Taking10off,60\times\frac{10}{100}=6 \\ \text{Amount = 60-6=54} \\ \end{gathered}$

Now considering the other order.

$\begin{gathered} 100\times\frac{10}{100}=10 \\ \text{amount = 100-10=90} \\ 40\text{ \% off , } \\ 90\times\frac{40}{100}=36 \\ \text{Amount = 90-36}=54 \end{gathered}$

Both ways are equal.
