The parasitic worm that infects people with schistosomiasis, commonly known as bilharzia, dwells in fresh water in tropical and subtropical areas.

The parasite lives primarily in Africa, although it is also present in some regions of South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Asia.

When you first contract schistosomiasis, you frequently don't have any symptoms, but the parasite can linger in the body for many years and harm organs including the bladder, kidneys, and liver.

If you suspect you may have the infection, consult your doctor right away. It is readily treated with a brief course of medication.
