What causes muscle fatigue?

  • Muscle fatigue may be caused due to accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles, ion imbalance (Na+, K+), less production of ATP as compared to its use in the cells.
  • Muscle fatigue is defined as the decrease in ability of muscles to generate force.
  • It occurs after exercise, strenuous activity, and aging. This may even be caused due to diseases like muscular dystrophy.
  • It results in pain, lessens the movement of body, etc.
  • If muscle fatigue occurs regularly even without performing any strenuous activities, one should immediately consult a doctor to find the underlying causes.
  • Caffeine and ephedrine are synthetic products which can be used to treat muscle fatigue.
