In this brief section, you can see a lot: a full cafeteria with students rushing to get to their tables, people surreptitiously glancing at August, and then Summer. The ambience of the cafeteria can be heard as children converse with one another, and it is rather loud.

Because this is Auggie's first day and he doesn't know where to sit, the mood appears frightening and nerve-wracking at first. Summer, on the other hand, brightens the mood by approaching August in a nice manner and striking up a discussion with him.
