The first funerary monuments of the Old Empire (2700-2250 BC) were some Egyptian tombs called Mastabas characterized by being flat-top-pyramid-shaped constructions made of stone and grouped in necropolis around the main pyramids. These tombs have an offering chapel decorated with paintings and reliefs that opens to another chamber called Serdab. The Serdab is a space where the body of the deceased was located with a statue in his honor. On several occasions an underground well was made to place the sarcophagus. This well was closed with stones to block access. These two spaces (Chapel-Serdab) were connected so that the deceased could receive the offerings deposited by his relatives.
Other very famous funeral constructions are the pyramids. They were built to bury the pharaohs and their family. One of the oldest pyramids is the one built for Pharaoh Zoser in Saqqara. It is a stepped pyramid built in stone by superposition of six Mastabas. This pyramid is in a funerary enclosure and is surrounded by other constructions. The most famous pyramids are those of the pharaohs Cheops, Chephren and Mikerinos, of the IV dynasty (2700 to 2500 BC) in the funerary complex of Gizeh. These pyramids are made of stone and have several labyrinths to protect the deceased and offerings. They are very solid constructions that still remain.
Especially during the New Kingdom (1580-1070 BC) the pharaohs were buried in hypogea in the Valley of the Kings. These excavations were huge underground galleries decorated with paintings and reliefs.
