Laura de Noves is a woman and a mother from Avignon, France. But because Petrarch gave no clue who Laura really was, some readers suggested another Laura's name. Some critics believe that Laura is not a fictional character, not inspired by one particular person.
Based on the poem, Petrarch was supposed to meet Laura for the first time on 6 April 1327 at a Church of Sts. Claire, Avignon. In his poetry, he seems to have made Laura a lifelong obsession, even until his death on April 6, 1348.
