The city was a land route from Europe to Asia and a waterway between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The strategic geographic location of Byzantium protected it from attacks.
Constantinople was at the tip of a peninsula so there was only one direction to attack from on land. So rather than having to defend, say, 40 miles of walls and getting surprised somewhere, they just had to defend, say, 10.
