Although the annexation was carried out mainly to increase American control, this annexation brought many controversies by Americans who did not see the annexation with a good eye and, mainly, by Hawaiians who did not consider that it was beneficial to them.

Firstly, many Americans complained that Hawaii was an extremely small territory, its annexation would bring great expense to the American economy and little benefit, since Hawaii was a very small territory and had little influence both politically and economically. In addition, many Americans, mainly Southerners, did not think it was right to annex a country marjoritically composed of non-white people and give them the same rights as white Americans.

The Hawaiians, on the other hand, did not want to give up their dominance in their own territory, claimed that Hawaii was sufficient economically and politically to survive without the help of a foreign government that would decimate their culture and interfere in their governance, ethnicity, customs and supremacy.
