Experiment: Inclined planes
graph used: https://dcs.owschools.com/media/g_ipc_2016/7/experiment_inclined_plane.htm

Experiment Video Transcript: In this experiment, you will determine the IMA, AMA, and efficiency.
The materials for this experiment are:
a smooth board
smooth block or other object to drag up a plane
a spring scale (calibrated in newtons)
string
books or blocks to support the inclined plane
and a meter stick.

Your job is to observe the experiment and collect your own data from this demonstration.
Be ready to record your observations and data.

You will be pulling an object up an inclined plane at different inclines.
Make and record a hypothesis about how changine the slope of inclined plane will affect the efficiency.
Measure the height and length of the plane, record the measurements.
Measure the mass of the object, and record. Convert the mass from grams to newtons by dividing by 102, and record.

Now slowly and steadily pull the object up the incline with the spring scale and string kept parallel to the incline.
Record the readout on the scale.
This will be the effort force.

Now increase the slope of the incline by increasing the height.
Measure the height of the new incline.
The length of the incline remains constant.
Slowly and steadily pull the object up the incline, record the readout from the scale.

Write a summary paragraph discussing this experiment and the results. Use the following questions and topics to help guide the content of your paragraph. According to your data, was your hypothesis correct? (Be sure to refer to your data when answering this question.) Summarize the conclusions that you can draw from this experiment. Use the questions above to guide your ideas. Summarize any difficulties or problems you had in performing the experiment that might have affected the results. Describe how you might change the procedure to avoid these problems. Give at least three examples from everyday life where an inclined plane is used to reduce the effort force needed to accomplish a task.

Answer:

Science experiment: Inclined plane

(Your name)

8th grade AP Science

(Teachers name)

(todays date or due date)

Hypothesis:

If the height of the inclined plane increases, then the IMA, AMA will increase And efficiency will decrease. This will be because a sharper incline will require more energy over a shorter distance than a shallow incline.

Trial: 1

Height: 11.15 Cm

Length: 56.60 Cm

Mass: 500 g (4.90 N)

Effort Force: 1.35 N

AMA: 3.63

IMA: 5.08

Efficiency: 71.46

Trial: 2

Height: 17.40 Cm

Length: 56.60 Cm

Mass: 500 g (4.90 N)

Effort force: 1.75 N

AMA: 2.80

IMA: 3.25

Efficiency: 86.15

Questions for “presenting your outcome”:

How does the length to height ratio (the IMA) of trial 1 compare to trial 2?

Why is the actual mechanical advantage less than the ideal mechanical advantage in each of the trials?

If a machine was 100% efficient, how would the AMA compare to the IMA?

Answers to those questions:

1: The IMA in trial 1 is greater than in trial 2 because an inclined plane with a shallower rise will have a higher ideal mechanical advantage because less effort can be applied over a greater distance in a shallow rise than in a steep one.

2: IMA of an inclined plane does not account for things like gravity weighing an object down and friction being generated between the object and the plane, among other factors. Because both of the listed factors are things that we know will affect the object being moved up the inclined plane, we can predict that the AMA will be lower because outside factors acting on the object make the inclined plane less efficient.

3: If a machine was 100% efficient, the IMA and AMA would be congruent. This is because for a medicine to be 100% efficient there would have to be no outside forces acting on the object. The ideal mechanical advantage does not calculate for outside forces, so with a machine having to be a place where exactly 0 outsides forces are present to be working at 100% efficiency, then common logic would say that the IMA and AMA would have to be the exact same.
