Douglass portrays the American Christianity in reference to slavery abolition by asserting the white Americans were practicing a Christianity that was against the teachings of the Bible.

Explanation:

Frederick Douglass in his legendary speech on the Independence Day of America, titled ‘What to the Slave is the Fourth of July’ stated that the independence celebrated by the white Christians was totally against their faith.

The Bible taught to love all people equally but the white Americans tortured and tormented all those who were not white. They had been successful in converting Christianity into an engine of savage cruelty and tyranny and confirming infidels to perform unethical and irreligious deeds.

However Christianity could come to the rescue if the churches helped in abolishing not only slavery but also the in-discrimination towards black people. Then America could profess to be true followers of Christianity.
