A gland is an organ that generates and emits chemical compounds that help the body accomplish specialised tasks.

  • A gland is often made up of cuboidal or columnar epithelium that lies on a basement membrane and is encircled by a meshwork of blood vessels.
  • There are mainly two different kinds of glands. They are endocrine and exocrine glands.
  • Endocrine glands are ductless glands that produce hormones and release them straight into the bloodstream. Endocrine glands are hormone-secreting glands that are components of the endocrine system. The pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pineal gland etc. are examples of endocrine glands.
  • Exocrine glands secrete substances to the body's surfaces through ducts. Sweat, tears, saliva, milk, earwax, sebum and digestive secretions are all secreted by exocrine glands.
