How did William Penn’s purpose for establishing a colony differ from that of Cornelius Jacobsen May?

Respuesta :

William Penn was a nobleman, writer, colonial proprietor of Pennsylvania. His purpose of establishing Pennsylvania is to found a refuge for religious minorities of Europe. On the other hand, Cornelius Jacobsen May, established the colony of Manhattan looking for his company affairs, as a result he was owner for just a year.

The differences in their purposes for establishing a colony in America are as follows:

William Penn left England to establish Pennsylvania in 1682 to have religious freedom as a Quaker, which England denied him. By establishing Pennsylvania, he enabled others like him to enjoy religious freedom.

On the other hand, Cornelius Jacobsen May was a Dutch businessman whose interest in the fur trade made him establish in present-day New Jersey because 30 families settled there with him. Then it was named "New Netherland."

Thus, Penn's purpose is religious, while May is economic purpose.
