One of the mistakes of Samuel Gompers was related to his attitude about immigrants, he was against unrestricted immigration, yet himself was from a Jewish family immigrant from England. He stated for the Labor Union that Chinese and Japanese workforce should be prevented from entering the US, this supported ideas that lead to many actions that restricted these immigrants rights for working, receiving citizenship and to deportations of these immigrants for many years.
Other point he is criticized for is about focusing the Union goals in the materialistic aims, which would have prevented the Union from growing into greater directions of social issues. Instead the Union went for collective bargains as referend in the expression "bread and butter", which was attained by contracts and negotiations between the union and the companies for salary, working hours and benefits.
