Mercator projection is used for road and weather maps. Any straight line on a Mercator projection map is a line of continuous true bearing that allows a navigator to plot a straight-line course that is why this projection is extensively used for navigation charts. However, since the scale is distorted, it is less practical for world maps and areas that are farther away from the Equator seem to look as if inexplicably and disproportionately large.
