The painter Antoine-Jean Gros (1771 - 1835) anticipated some of the characteristics of romanticism, such as the drama and nationalism in Bonaparte visiting the plague victims of Jafa. Dating from 1804, it was commissioned by the French leader to represent an episode of the Egyptian campaign.

It was shown to the public shortly before the consecration of Napoleon as emperor, and shows it at a time when, in Jaffa, Palestine, in 1799, it tries to lift the spirits of its plague-ridden troops. The work uses a visual arcade scheme, learned by Gros from his master David.
