The easiest way to solve this would be to turn both fractions into improper fractions.
All you have to do is multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator to it. The number you have will replace the old numerator and you will keep the denominator as it is.

[/tex] Multiply 8 (the whole number) by 4 (the denominator), which should give you 32. Add 1 (the numerator) to 32, giving you 33, which you will put over 4 (the denominator), giving you [tex] \frac{33}{4} [/tex].
Do the same thing with [tex]7 \frac{3}{4} [/tex], giving you [tex] \frac{31}{4} [/tex].
Now, it's much easier to solve. Subtract the two numerators and keep the same denominator.
[tex] \frac{33}{4} - \frac{31}{4} = \frac{2}{4} [/tex]
Simplify [tex] \frac{2}{4} to \frac{1}{2} [/tex].
The answer is, therefore, [tex] \frac{1}{2} [/tex].
