The answer would be military leaders vying for power took it by coup.  They overthrow the government with the help of former colonial powers who still want to maintain their interests in the region.  This  has negatively affect many African countries they struggle with problems such as poverty, corruption and warring factions. Some have been assassinated and replaced with puppet governments.
