Let the present age of the son be 'x'

So, his father age = x + 24 


12 yrs ago,
Son's age = x - 12
Fathers age = (x + 24) - 12 
= x + 12 

Given,
5(x -12) = x + 12
5x - 60 = x + 12 
4x = 72
x = 72/4 = 18


So, the son's present age = 18 yrs 

And, fathers present age = 18 + 24 = 42 yrs
