The layer would be the CONVECTIVE ZONE. The convective zone is named as such because of that is the layer where convection occurs. Convection is the type of heat transfer where heat goes up and circles back down to be heated as seen with a pot of boiling water with rice.
The rice heats up, along with the water and it goes up. When it touches the cold air, it cools down and travels back down, which will be heated again.
