The United States had stepped in to support the continuation of Democracy in Vietnam. However, the people of Vietnam didn't like nor want the Diem family in power. The Diem family were supported by the U.S. due to their willingness to work with the US government and US businesses. The Vietnamese people saw corruption and abuse of power. Yet, despite legal elections, could not oust the Diem family. 

America's support of the Diem government was a conflict of interest due to the south Vietnamese were against the Diem Government.

A government refers to the system or group of people that govern an organized community.

The Americans did not approve of the methods of the Diem government but they supported it because they were not communists.

Thus, American support was a conflict of interest for the Diem government due to the south Vietnamese were against the Diem Government.
