Mount Saint Helens represents an example of primary succession, which began with a volcanic eruption. Primary succession occurs in basically lifeless areas—regions in which the soil is incapable of sustaining life as a result of such factors as lava flows. a volcanic eruption is an eruption in which a stream of gas, ash and lava is violently ejected to a height of several miles.
