Chief Justice Roger Taney wrote that slaves are property and that they have "no rights which the white man was bound to respect."
This controversial ruling stated that slaves are property and not people. Along with this, the ruling essentially allowed slavery to exist anywhere in the US even though several states already abolished in by this time in 1857. This case only fueled tensions between the North and South even more.
