The function of inverted chromosome segments included in balancer chromosomes to prevent crossing over (genetic recombination).

 Balancer chromosomes are multiply inverted chromosomes that suppress meiotic crossing over between homologous chromosomes during meiosis and prevent the recovery of crossover products so that chromosome segments may be transmitted intact for multiple generations.
