You are a professor who is teaching a class on the policy of containment during the Cold War. To prepare for your class, outline your lecture using the chapter and the information you gathered in the online activity The Cold War Begins. Your outline should contain explanations on how each topic or event (such as the Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, Berlin Airlift, and Korean War) reflected or did not reflect the U.S. policy of containment. You will use your outline as the basis for an article you will write as Part 2 of this Graded Assignment.

--The Berlin Airlift came about as a result of an economic crisis and an attempt by the West to introduce a new currency to stabilize the country’s finances.

The Russians closed access to the Western-controlled sectors of Berlin, threatening to starve the people in those sectors unless the Allies withdrew their currency plans.

Since ground and rail transportation routes were blocked by the Communists, the west flew planes into West Berlin with food and supplies, starting in June of 1948.

By the following spring, more supplies were reaching the city than had previously arrived by rail, and the Soviets ended the blockade in May of 1949. None of this changed the boundaries or lowered tensions much.

The West, primarily the U.S. simply maintained the status quo with their policy of containment so that Communism didn’t speak significantly into other parts of the world. The freedom of West Berlin was an example of the will of the West to maintain that containment.

Truman Doctrine- The Truman Doctrine was a law proposed by President Harry Truman in 1947 and finalized in 1948. This law was meant to help the countries of Greece and Turkey. The US was concerned about these two countries falling under the control of the communist Soviet Union. To ensure this didn't happen, the US gave $400 million in economic aid to stabilize each countries economy.

Marshall Plan- This plan would help Europe recover after World War II. This plan gave $13 billion in economic aid to countries like Great Britain, France, and West Germany. Ultimately, the goal was to ensure that none of these countries fell under the control of the communist Soviet Union.

Korean War- After adopting a policy of containment (aka stopping the spread of communism) the US helped South Korea in the Korean War. The US involvement was based out of fear that the South Korea would fall under the control of the communist North Korean government. The US mission in stopping the spread of communism was successful, as South Korea remained a capitalist country.
