There are a variety of challenges that Chris Gardner faced by getting the job at Dean winter and selling the bone density scanners. The scanner represented many different things to Chris. First it represented money. Chris'q challenge is to sell his scanners to help fund his and his son's life whilst he is completing his internship at Dean Witter. Second, the scanners represent a particular burden for Chris: they symbolize the challenges he has had to overcome throughout his life in order for him to move forward and establish a new life after the internship where he will have the financial power to off a better life for his son.
