All these enlightenment thinkers influenced the American Revolution because during this period philosophers began to question who should govern a nation and how a nation should be governed.

John Locke, for example, defended that every human being had natural rights such as life, liberty, and property, and those rights could not be taken away or given up. This was the base of the American Revolution and also the base of the American Constitution. First, because the King could not limit the rights of the American Colonies. When he violated the rights of the Americans this opened the door for them to revolt and establish a new government.

Montesquieu also influenced the American Revolution because he defended that the government should have three branches - executive, legislative and judicial powers - that would balance each other with their powers. He defended that if the power was only in the king's hands abuse would happen.
