In the mind of President Abraham Lincoln, Reconstruction should have been a period of forgiveness and unification to solidify the United States, Unfortunately, it was not like this. The Reconstruction period in the south was very different. Most African Americans in the South remained desperately poor, large planters remained politically powerful, and political gains by blacks ended not long after Reconstruction.

What happened was that President Lincoln gave many opportunities for southerners to do Reconstruction their own way. And of course, it did not work because the southern economy depended so much on slavery. Slaves had to work hard to produce the number of crops in the large plantations that were exported to Europe.
