STORY: Barbara Charline Jordan was born February 21, 1936. The youngest daughter of a Baptist minister, she lived with her two sisters in Houston, Texas. After graduating with honors from Phillis Wheatley High School, she attended Texas Southern University and majored in government and history. After graduating with honors from TSU in 1956, she earned her law degree from Boston University. In 1966, Jordan was elected to the Texas Senate and served as the first African American woman in that body. Later in her career, Jordan was elected to the U.S. Congress. She was the first African American from Texas to serve in the U.S. Congress. As a member of the House, she earned a reputation for being a skilled politician and a forceful and dynamic individual. In December 1977, Barbara Jordan decided not to seek reelection. She taught at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. Before she died, Ms. Jordan was honored by Democratic President Bill Clinton with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award presented to a civilian.
