The chief European import the Chinese were interested in was firearms. The Chinese - during the Imperial era - did not have the ability manufacture dependable and powerful rifles and pistol, hence they needed to import them from Europe.  There was nothing else that the Europeans possessed that the Chinese did not.  The imports were suspended due to the Opium Wars between the British and the Chinese.  Soon after, the Chinese developed methods for producing firearms, themselves, on a vast scale.  

The opium war took place between China and Britain during the 18th century. As the result of this, the Chinese government developed its own manufacturing units of firearms.

What were the causes of Opium Wars?

The Opium Wars was fought between the China and Britain the opium had negative effect on people's health, so China wanted to suppress the opium trade. As  the Britishers were illegally exporting opium from India through China's route.

  1. The Chinese were interested in import of firearms from Europe.
  2. During the Imperial era china did not have capacity to produce powerful rifles and pistol, so they relied on of import from Europe.
  3. Europe imported opium from India and sold it to China at profit.
  4. The imports were suspended by the Chinese government as the response to Opium Wars.
  5. After the two Opium Wars,  Chinese government developed its manufacturing units of firearms.
