if we are talking about “of mice and men” then George defends Lennie when they are around others because George is like a brother to Lennie, he tries to keep Lennie out of trouble as much as he can. He privately scolds at him because he get frustrated with Lennie sometimes but in the end he can’t stay mad at Lennie
