Walter Scott in the novel "Ivanhoe" explains why there is tension between the two sides of the tournament and trying to find a way to solve the problem of tension. The problems existed in a clash of local and national, patriarchal and progress. The Normans in England have not yet merged with the Anglo-Saxons, and the Anglo-Saxon old know and the new Norman barons are constantly fighting among themselves. Ordinary people are equally oppressed by both, but by virtue of patriarchal habit and national trait leans towards Anglo-Saxon feudal lords and supports them.
