The cause of World War I was c. Austria-Hungary's imperialist ambitions to dominate the Balkans.

Other causes of World War I include the formation of military alliances among nations, imperialism or the excessive desire to control other nations, and extreme forms of nationalism, especially Nazism.

However, the trigger for World War I was the assassination of Ferdinand in Serbia.  Following this, the Austria-Hungary state declared war on Serbia.

Thus, with just the growth of imperialism fuelled by the unfortunate assassination of a person, many million lives perished in the world war and prepared the ground for the second world war.
