You can estimate the value of a square root that is not a perfect square by looking at the perfect squares that are larger and smaller. For instance, for sqrt(52), we know that the perfect square of 49 is 7 and that 64 is 8. So we know that 52 is between those two and closer to 7. So you can make a reasonable estimation using those facts.
