In Canto XX of Inferno, the first section of The Divine Comedy, Dante meets the false prophets. These are the people who engaged in divination during their lifetime, and are now punished by always having to look backwards. Dante is so moved by them he cries out of pity. However, Virgil reprimands him, as he claims these people more than any other deserve to be in this ring.
