After WWII, after its unconditional surrender, Germany was divided in four occupation zones during the Postdam Conference in August 1945. Each of the zones was supposed to be controlled by one of the four victorious allied powers: UK, US, France and URSS.
The regions controlled by the first three (US, UK and France) were unified and became a capitalist nation, the Federal Republic of Germany. Meanwhile, the area controlled by the URSS remained apart and a socialist republic was created, known as the German Democratic Republic.
